Keizer, Oregon is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 12,564 at the 2010 census. Keizer is the cultural and economic center of the area. It is home to Pacific University, Keizer Regional Airport and many other businesses and institutions. The first Europeans to visit what is now Clackamas County were Spanish Jesuit missionaries in 1792. They named it "San Francisco" after José de San Francisco, founder of California. A year later they founded an mission here called La Salle India Company Mission on land that became part of present-day Oregon City. In 1825 the company sold its holdings in Oregon City to James Kippings for $2 million dollars. In 1846 John Sutter founded the Darroch Brothers Ranch east of town near Cannon Hill Lake where he built a log cabin and began operating a fur-trading business with his brother David Darroch. The brothers were successful until 1840 when their ranch was taken over by American Fur Company president George Custer who died there in 1853 without leaving any children behind him to continue his operations. In 1863 Portland businessman Alfred Milne bought most of the remaining stock in American Fur Company for $2 million dollars and renamed it The New Western Fur Company which developed into Scrantonfurth Paper Co., one of the largest paper companies in America before it went bankrupt in 1886. Oregon City had no major industry until World War II when Boeing started manufacturing aircraft here from Boeing Field on Swan Island north of town during World War II then expanding production to building plants all over Northwest United States as well as southeast Asia for Douglas Aircraft Corporation (now Airbus). After 1945 Boeing retired its manufacture facilities but kept some assets here including a research center which became known as NASA's Glenn Research Center before it too closed down in 1992 following Space Shuttle Challenger disaster blamed ondesign flaws with those same planes made at Boeing Field by both McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed Martin teams together again becoming known as "Boeing Mexico". Despite these accidents Keizer has never seen an industrial plant close down due purely to technological problems while much larger cities such as Detroit have experienced this multiple times throughout their histories especially during lean years like today's recession where joblessness rates are skyrocketing while industrial jobs remain largely unchanged or even declining with mass layoffs often accompanying them usually leading to social turmoil right along side traditional labor unions seeking concessions like higher wages and benefits etcetera ever since although less commonly publicized these days given current political correctness about anything that might be perceived as being remotely associated with unionism these days unlike during earlier waves like say 1930s or 1940s when such things tended not only to be openly discussed but also generally accepted even praised by most people considered more moderate types within society despite wide public opposition back then especially outside those circles considered more radical conservative/libertarian type characters such as economist Murray Rothbard who once said about unions: "…the organized labor movement can best be characterized not so much by how many members it has but how successfully it has been able to monopolize key resources essential for economic productivity." They named it "Lac de la Salle" after Jean-Baptiste Laclède, captain of the Resolution and Survey Expedition during the early 18th century whose vessel had been lost near this location on November 5, 1797. A post office was established at Keizer in 1876, and by 1880 its population had reached 508 residents. A sawmill started operation in 1882 and soon became one of the leading mills in Oregon; it continued production until1964 when it closed because of competition from more efficient mills elsewhere in the state. The mill left an important legacy on Keizer with its variety of Timbers lumber products such as flooring, fencing, cabinetmaking and toys. In addition to its economic importance to the community, the mill also played a significant role in shaping Keizer's history as a recreational center for locals and tourists alike with its extensive boating and fishing operations. The mill reopened as an educational institution in 1984; today it is known as Cascade Community College (CCC). Its importance cannot be overstated given that it opened up opportunities for students who might not have otherwise had access to quality education outside their home communities or marketsplace locations like Portland or Eugene. As an educational institution which has actively promoted itself both within town and beyond - sponsoring numerous events throughout town - CCC has helped make Keizer one of the most vibrant communities within miles of Portland proper!
The first known permanent residents in Keizer were the Hidatsa people. The area was first explored by Captain George Vancouver in 1792, and he thought it might be a good place to set up a trading post. He named the spot "Keizer" after his ancestor, John Keiser, who had been one of the original settlers in Oregon. In 1824, General Lew Wallace founded Fort Wallace on the site of what is now downtown Keizer. He thought that this would be a strong military outpost and hoped to stop any attack from the Sioux Indians living around him. The fort lasted only six months before it was destroyed by Indian warriors. However, FortWallace's success may have been due more to its location than anything else. The fort was located on an important trade route between Portland and Washington D.C., which made it very useful to traders and soldiers alike.
