Fremont founded the first settlement on the present-day site of Hillsboro. They named their new town after General George A. Smith's forces that had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The town grew quickly, and by 1876 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1908, Hillsboro became an incorporated city with a population of over 5,000 people.
