There are many scopes that have been in use throughout Hillsboro, Oregon. Some of these include the old Brown and Williamson Optics telescopes, the modern Celestron telescopes, and even a few homemade scopes. Some of these people also contribute to the history of this community by being stewards of these tools and memories. The first optics company in Hillsboro was Brown & Williamson Optics ca. 1892-1894. This company manufactured three types of telescope objective lenses: 2-inch Plossl objectives with a 60mm eyepiece tube (then called "Hillsboro"), 4x50mm Schmidt & Bender objectives with an eyepiece tube up to 400mm (then called "Ridgefield"), and 10x60mm objectives with an eyepiece tube up to 1,000mm (then called "Oregon City"). The company closed its doors in 1894 due to financial difficulties. However, it left behind a legacy that still exists today - many residents in Hillsboro cherish brown and Williamson optics products! The first Celestron telescope was built by Harry Eustis in 1929 as part of his project to build a large reflecting telescope on Mount Hood at Salem University (now Portland State University). It was used for scientific research until 1969 when it was donated to the University of Oregon Museum of Natural Sciences. Today it is one of only two surviving Celestron telescopes from that era - the other is located at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. The second Celestron telescope was designed by Ron Beemer and built by him and his team at Southern Oregon Instruments Company between 1962-1965 while he worked for Raytheon Aircraft Corporation as their technical engineer responsible for advanced astronomy products development programs across North America. After working at Raytheon for several yearsRon decided to start his own business focusing on amateur astronomy products development which would later be named Southern Oregon Instruments Company Incorporated In 1970Ron sold all his assets including patents and equipment manufacturing rights back to Raytheon Corporation effective January 1st1971 thru December 31st1972 In 1980Southern Oregon InstrumentsCompany merged into Celestron Industries Incorporated

Oregon's Scopes movement began in the early 1800s when men and women of means built telescopes to better understand the universe. Hillsboro was home to one of Oregon's first observatories, which operated from 1824-1848. In 1856, the first International Astronomical Union meeting was held in Portland, Oregon and a resolution was passed urging members nations to build their own observatories. The following year, Hillsboro became the first city in Oregon to have a public telescope on its premises. From 1858-1860, Hillboro also served as headquarters for the Western States Observatory (WSO), which was designed to promote scientific research and education in Northwestern United States. It is interesting that WSO occupied many of the same buildings as later Oregon State University's Department of Astrophysics!
Hillsboro, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 10,792 at the 2010 census, down from 11,527 in 2000. Hillsboro is the largest city in Polk County and the second-largest city east of Interstate 5. The town was founded by farmers in 1847 as a small community on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1870 it became an agricultural center with large farms that produced hay, wheat, oats, cotton, and other crops. The town's growth slowed during World War II as industry shifted to Vancouver and Portland. Afterward, Hillsboro experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Portland suburbs. However, recent economic stagnation has led to increasing calls for government intervention to help revive thetown's economy. Today Hillsboro is home to several cultural attractions including: The Hillsboro Museum of Art; Pioneer Courthouse Square; East High School; and many smaller businesses and restaurants

Hillsboro is located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, about 25 miles east of Portland. The community was founded by Mormon settlers in 1847, and soon became a center for agriculture and commerce. In the late 19th century, Hillsboro became known as the "city of lights" because of its many theaters and hotels. In 1925, Hillsboro was incorporated as a city, and has since grown into a major metropolis with over 100,000 residents.
Hillsboro was founded in 1847 by John and Anna Hills. The town was named for hills that lay to the west of the city. In 1855, John Hills donated land to create a school district, which became Hillsboro School District No. 1. In 1903, the Oregon Legislature passed an act creating Oregon's first public university, Portland State University. Portland State University designated Hillsboro as its main campus. In 1916, the United States Congress created the Multnomah County Circuit Court System in Oregon and added Hillsboro as one of its districts. The courthouse was built on land donated by John and Anna Hills and opened in 1917.
