In 1957-58, when Hilltop Junior/Senior High School closed due to lack of enrollment; Hillsboro'S only public secondary school until that point; Central Secondary Collegeopened its doors (now known as Hood River Valley Community College) and served as Hilltop's replacement for many years until it closed in 1984 due to dwindling enrollments statewide following the opening of community colleges throughout Oregon). Since 1985-86 there has been an effort by Mayor Sam Adams Jr., City Manager Don Hickey and City Councilmember Jeff Selbin to create a new library system within town limits which would include a library building on Main Street adjacent to Interstate 5 between South First Street & Second Street--the current site of Central Library which opened in 1997} On July 15th 2017 voters approved Measure 97 which will fund renovations at both Central Library locations over 2 years with no increase in taxes residents are currently paying
