Hillsboro, Oregon is a small town located in the Malheur National Forest in Douglas County, Oregon. The population of Hillsboro was 4,883 at the 2010 census. Hillsboro is the county seat of Douglas County. The area that now includes Hillsboro was first settled by Europeans in 1847 as part of what was then called the Isthmus of Juan de Fuca. The name "Hillsboro" derived from a Yaqui word meaning "place where people gather." In 1852, ranchers discovered gold near present-day Hillsboro and began to mine it. This led to the town's growth, and by 1860 it had become an important trading center for the surrounding region. In 1862, General Don Carlos Buell established Camp Benton within easy reach of Hillsborough on Umatilla River for his forces besieging Eugene,Oregon during the Civil War. From here Buell issued orders directing all soldiers conducting military operations against Eugene to march through Hillsborough into town and load their guns on wagons brought downriver to be parked at Pumphrey's Store before proceeding into town limits where they could be unloaded and placed back into service elsewhere. The town developed rapidly as a result of this development; by 1865 it boasted a store, post office, schoolhouse, jail and five churches. By 1870 Hillsborough had also acquired several other buildings including two hotels and three stores which were used until 1915 when they were replaced by an opera house and movie theater complex which remain extant today (the edifice currently houses the Community Bank). During World War II many local businesses supported military efforts both locally and overseas including: shoeshine parlors adjoining Gillem's grocery store; gas stations operated by Jenssen Brothers (now Chevron) along with several C&O Railroad tracks running through town center; blacksmithing shops operated by Johnnie Waddle who also ran several restaurants including one known as Waddle’s Western Cafe which remains open today; various industrial properties such as agriculture ponds owned by Jenssen Brothers (now Chevron), Lockheed Aircraft Company (later McDonnell Douglas), washing machines made by Parker & Son Incorporated (now Samsung Electronics) among others providing jobs for locals during wartime time period
