Hillsboro, Oregon is located in the far northwest corner of the United States and is one of the most rural communities in the country. The community has a population of only around 10,000 people, but it has a rich history as a center for gun sights sales and shooting. The first guns were used in Hillsboro by Native Americans who hunted game in the area. When white settlers arrived in the area, they began to settle and build homes. One of these settlers, John Whitehead, bought land near what is now Hillsboro on May 15, 1853. He named his property "Brownsville" after his brother-in-law, Browning brothers Elijah and George Washington Browne. In 1854, Humboldt County was created from parts of Multnomah County. Hillboro became part of Humboldt County and soon there were guns available for sale here. In 1858, Carlisle Waddell donated land to Hillsboro for a rifle range which would eventually become known as Gunsby Range (later called Redding Rifle Range). This donation helped make firearms more accessible to residents here and opened up opportunities for shooting sports involvement throughout the community. On July 3rd 1912 an agreement was made between The National Rifle Association (NRA) and The American Legion to allow members of both organizations to shoot at each other's ranges during national NRA meetings held at Double Troublegun Clubhouse on Douglas Street in Hillsboro. This event would later be referred to as "Gun World Expo." Hillsboro is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 30,811 at the 2010 census. Hillsboro was founded on July 4, 1847 by wagon train passengers from Saco and Portland as part of the Oregon Territory. It became a town on October 15, 1847. Hillsboro was named for Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Hill (1786-1853), who served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican–American War and as an interpreter at peace negotiations between Mexico and America. One of Hillsboro's most famous residents was Lili Elizondo (1901-1990). She was born in Puebla, Mexico to American parents and moved with her family to Hillsboro when she was two years old. After graduating from high school in 1933 she worked as a reporter for the Herald Tribune before moving to Hollywood to become an actress. Her acting career included roles in "The Godfather", "The Picture of Dorian Gray", "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Wuthering Heights". In 1948 she married screenwriter Julius Epstein and they lived in London until his death in 1974; they had one son together before he divorced Elizondo after five years of marriage. In 1984, Hillsboro held its first annual international festival of film art called Fairest Film Festival & Art Market which featured over 100 films from around the world along with 400+ exhibitors from 25 countries
