Hillsboro is a town in Lane County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Hillsboro is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. Hillsboro is the third-largest city in Multnomah County and one of the fastest growing areas in Oregon. It is located on the Willamette River, about halfway between Portland and Salem. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hillsboro were fur traders from Vancouver Island who met with local Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1851, U.S. Representative William Higginson sent a team of surveyors to explore land west of Portland for the government of Oregon Territory. They named their new town after General James Giddings, Commander of American forces during the Mexican–American War and later Governor of California under Ulysses S Grant. When gold was discovered near Salem in 1852, people from Hillsboro started arriving to work on the mines and mills around that time. In 1855, Congress created Multnomah County as part of an effort to create a Territorial government for all of Oregon before it could be admitted into Confederation as a state. The county seat was moved from Salem to Hillsboro due to its location on riverfront property valuable enough for development but not so valuable as to make it worth moving the county seat inland again. The first courthouse was built in 1865; it burned down in 1906 but was replaced by another courthouse which still stands today (a contributing factor being that no one wanted to pay for construction). The growth ofowntown Hillsboro during this time led to streetcar service running through downtown between 1901 and 1904 which made shopping opportunities available along Center Street eastward from Main Street (then known as "Pine St.)". This helped spur development along Center Street including many businesses opened by entrepreneur Arthur Ashe who ran his own grocery store there until he sold it several years later; this area today includes much older mixed use buildings than might be found elsewhere within Downtown Hillsboro given how well streetcar service connected these businesses together back then! In 1915 Mayor Harry Jenson persuaded voters statewide not only to build a new high school (now known as Lewis & Clark High School) but also increase appropriations for public schools by 10%. This decision helped make Hillside Elementary School – now home Toombs Middle School – one of only two high schools open despite Measure I passing 2 years earlier which would have closed most public schools across Oregon! A major fire destroyed most buildings within downtown Hallston Avenue business district on May 14th 1908 while residents were returning home after dinner; although rebuilt quickly following that event many storefronts remain vacant until present day because they were too damaged or uneconomical to rebuild correctly! A new commercial district southwest corner Main and boulevard streets developed shortly afterwards comprising some newer brick/frame structures replaced some olderadobe/brick structures; this area currently contains several functioning businesses including Anheuser Busch Brewery since 1996! In 1925 when Interstate 5 bypassed central Multnomah County entirely making Hillside obsolete as its primary business district - much discussion surrounded whether or not Toombs Middle School should close following this changes - however ultimately it stayed open thanks largelyto continuous philanthropy from Mrs Mrs Earle Ashe!! Oregon was first organized as a territory of California in 1846. The area now includes much of the eastern side of the U.S., including Hillsboro, Oregon. As a result, Hillsboro has some history dating back to when it was part of California. On January 14, 1850, the Territorial Legislature of Oregon created a town called "Hillsboro" in what is now Yamhill County. The name for the town derived from nearby hills and not from any particular location in central Oregon.
