Hillsboro is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 7,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The fertile valley that now includes Hillsboro was originally home to the Hapalua people, who were first documented in 1693 as living on what is now the eastern edge of Hillsboro. The Hapalua were then forced out by Native Americans and relocated to present-day Morrow County, New Mexico in 1864. They returned to live on their original land in 1862 when it was acquired by John McLoughlin, superintendent of Indian affairs for Oregon and California under Ulysses S. Grant Administration policy designed to end Indian removal through treaty negotiations and military action. In 1872, McLoughlin donated all but 2 miles (3 km) of his ranch south of where Hillsboro now stands to become a public school district that would serve the entire community including areas west of Multnomah Falls near Salem and east of Bendigo Road between La Grande and Lloyd townships. When they opened their new school on May 1, 1892, residents chose "Hillsboro" as its name because it had been given to them by General George Washington Hill during a visit two years earlier while he was governor of Oregon Territory. The name stuck and has remained unchanged since then; even though Hillsboro became an incorporated town in 1907 it still uses "Hillsboro" as its name on official documents such as deeds and business cards. By 1900, Hillsboro had grown sufficiently to warrant its own post office and began to develop significant businesses such as a millinery shop and lumberyard. During World War II, Hillsboro played an important role in the production of munitions near Multnomah Falls. In 1945-46, when war reoccupied much of Western Oregon after Japan's surrender, many residents left their homes for fear that they would be occupation targets if they remained living within artillery range of Japanese forces stationed throughout Northwestern Oregon. Many local businesses were closed during this time period; however, several small businesses managed to stay open despite difficult circumstances. Aftermath: After World War II ended there was an influx of new people which caused some problems because they were not used to country life or being around other people from different backgrounds like before war started so they didn't know how to act or communicate
