Since 2000, Hillsborough has been home to two large art festivals each year: OPAC-Oregon Pacific Art Conference (formerly known as Northwest Folklife Festival) in early May;[and] MAXIMUM Contemporary Art Fair (MAXIM) held annually during September –October on Exhibition Plaza adjacent to MAX Light Rail Station

Hillsboro is a town in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Hillsboro is located on the extreme southern border of the county and lies in the Willamette Valley east of Salem. The first permanent settler in what is now Hillsboro was Nicolas Cage, who arrived in 1853 with his family from New York City. Cage and his wife Nancy built their home on the site of what is now the Circle K off Airport Boulevard. Hillboro's only store, operated by S & J Smith until 1955, was located on Northwest Third Street. In 1887, John Wesley Sellers founded Sellers Land and Manufacturing Company to produce farm implements and other supplies for farmers in Whatcom County. On November 15, 1890, Hancock County voters approved a $5 per acre assessment to support this enterprise; it became known as hillsborough landowning company stockholdership society (later Hillsborough Land Trust). The company produced goods such as flour for local markets before becoming part of American Canals Corporation in 1902 when that corporation merged with General Electric Company. In 1912 A C Fords grocery store opened at 511 N State Street; it became one of Hillsboros most popular tourist destinations during its heyday. In 1950s and 1960s many young people left Portland for jobs opportunities available outside of Oregon due to high taxes and lack of opportunity within the state government related thereto. As a result many young people moved into farming towns such as Hillsboro which had few job options outside of agriculture while also maintaining its cultural significance through music festivals which drew residents from around the region including Portland
Hillsboro was founded in 1847 by George Washington Hill and his wife Lydia. The town was named for the bluff on which it stood. In 1850, the first post office was established in Hillsboro. The town prospered during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its location at the junction of state Route 97 and Oregon Route 26. However, after Oregon became a United States state in 1859, Hillsboro lost much of its business activity as residents moved to new settlements within the state. In 1870, Hillsboro came under control of Portland, but continued to enjoy a high level of prosperity until the turn of the century when industrialization began to take hold in Oregon and other parts of America. By 1910, however, Hillsboro had become an impoverished small town with few resources available to it.
