The first settlers in Hillsboro were men led by David Moody who arrived with his family in December 1847 from Illinois. Moody hired another man named James Fenton to help him build a house and store on what is now Main Street. When crops failed and Moody could not find someone to work his land, he sold it to John Sellers for $200 on October 8, 1850. On November 1, 1850, Solomon Waddell purchased land adjoining Moody's property for $300 and built himself a cabin thereon known as Cabin No. 2 (later renamed Waddell's Store). In 1854, the townsite of Hillsborough was platted by Moses Wattenberg and others under an agreement made with David Buttrick that specified that both villages would share one bridge across Hood River so traffic could move between them easily. The area aroundpresent-day Hillside Avenueand Lombard Street were developed as housing during this time period; today these areas are part of downtown Hillsboro." In 1865, Settlement Company agent Hosea Freeman surveyed lots within present-day Hillside Avenueand Lombard Street which formed what is today Pioneer Square in anticipation of future settler arrivals looking for cheap land near waterways where they could farm their livestock and build homes or businesses adjacent to navigable streams or river mouths accessible only by boat or canoe or through traveling long distances on horseback or wagon daysharing services provided by local merchants interested in selling goods along these routes."
