It has been manufacturing rounds for firearms and other munitions ever since. Today, Hillsboro’s ammo plant produces over 1 million rounds per day, making it one of the largest producer of ammunition in the United States. This production facility is also one of the most reliable and efficient in the nation. Hillsboro is part of the Portland metropolitan area and is home to many of the city's largest employers including Google and Boeing. Hillsboro has been occupied by humans since at least 7500 BC when people were living near what is now downtown Portland. The first European to visit Hillsboro was David Thomson on November 20th, 1824 while exploring the region for potential new fur traders with his party from Vancouver Island. The community began to grow rapidly after residents voted to incorporate as a town in 1909. In 1915, work began on an important bypass connecting Interstate 5 and Portland which became known as "The Hill." The Hill led to increased development around town with mills that produced flour, paper products and other goods until World War II wheniths production stopped due to rationing. With the war ended came increased demand for jobs in industry but also drove prices up for local consumers who could no longer afford high-quality goods brought over from abroad. In 1957, Salem-Hillsboro School District No. 2 merged into Multnomah County Schools; this left Hillsborough without any public schools until 1995 when it merged with Beaverton School District 1 (now Beaverton School District 10). In recent years there have been efforts underway by both Multnomah County and Salem-Hillsboro school districts to open new schools within the boundaries of their respective districts - measures which have so far failed despite support from Mayor Charlie Hales and Superintendent Anita Weiermann respectively. Today's economy comes largely from services such as health care and software development; however much of Hillsborough's population still depends on agriculture or retail employment within walking distance of either supermarkets or pharmacies
Hillsboro was founded in 1847 by Capt. George Hills and his wife, Ann. The name was derived from the hill on which town was located. The first post office in Hillsboro was established in 1851, and the first store opened in 1857. In 1865, the town incorporated as a city. Growth of the city led to development of Streets and avenues, libraries, parks and other public amenities. Today, Hillsboro is a vibrant community with nearly 1 million residents who enjoy its arts and culture, shopping opportunities, educational institutions and businesses
