By 1912, there were six stores and two hotels in the town. In 1923, the population had grown to 1,050 and by 1930 it had reached 2,000. In 1951, the community closed its doors after a fire destroyed most of the buildings and killed three people. In 1957–58, local ranchers decided to spray herbicides on their land to stop thistles from taking up space and growing wild; this caused an increase of longhorn beetles on crops that led to a bull worm infestation that lasted until 1960; this also led to an increase in rough stockyards around town that became known as "Theehorns". After several years of research and development by scientists at Oregon State University's Agricultural Experiment Station (ASES), Hermiston reopened in 1967 as an agricultural research center with support from the county government and private donors. Today H-E-R-M-I-T-O-N is one of OSU's leading agricultural research centers focused on developing new technologies for food production
Hermiston is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the banks of the Willamette River. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Hermiston were Spanish traders in 1778 who named it "Hernandez" after a local Indian chief. In 1843, Cornelius Waddell and his group of Mormons founded a church here and named it after their leaders, Brigham Young and Joseph Smith. The town's growth stagnated until the late 1800s when a railroads arrived to provide transportation and jobs for locals during boom times around irrigation projects. In 1924, Hermiston became an incorporated town with a post office; its population peaked at 2,500 in 1950 but declined to 1,801 by 2000 due to loss of jobs in the agricultural sector and other technological changes outside of Hermiston's borders. The local economy has since rebounded with new development including an e-commerce company that opened up in 2009 and several restaurants along with new housing developments throughout 2012-2013 which helped increase the population back above 2,000 again as of 2016
