Herrington Elementary School was founded in 1907 when Mrs. Lillian Herrington donated land to school district officials for use as an elementary school site; it has since been renamed McLaughlin Middle School after her husband Denzil McLaughlin who served as Superintendent of Schools here from 1951 to 1957. A post office called Hermiston was established at this location on July 9, 1873, by order of President Ulysses S Grant; it operated until 1865 because of lack of facilities at that time near downtown Portland which had become too populous for mail delivery service overland or via steamboats along the Willamette River system (the only way then to distribute mail within Portland). The first postmaster was Mr./Mrs.(unknown) whose term ended October 30th 1865 because no more letters could be sent from this location due to high demand from residents for goods & services! In 1901 Fenton leased property east of 3rd St., west of Hawthorne Ave., north side of Morrison Ave., northeast corner lot 2nd St., & southeast corner lot 12th St.; these businesses were destroyed by fire November 25th 1902: [1] This also marked the beginning of what would become known as "The Great Fire" which raged through central Oregon (& much nearby western US) throughout Nov ‘02-Jan ‘03 leaving many families homeless & changed forever how we view our local fires – they are now referred to locally simply as "The Great Fire"
