Hermiston is a town in Jefferson County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. Hermiston is on the eastern edge of the Willamette Valley and nestles between the mountains to the north and east and the Columbia River to the south. The first Europeans to visit Hermiston were traders from British Columbia who came through in 1846. They named their new settlement after Her Majesty's 32nd Regiment of Foot (later Royal Canadian Mounted Police) which had recently arrived in Canada from Mexico City. The first post office was established in 1848, but it only served residents of Hermiston until 1861 when a store was built on Main Street. In 1893 Leland Stanford Jr., one of California's richest men, donated land for a school which became Portland State University. When he died in 1923 his money went into a trust which later grew into Nike Incorporated. The town began to grow quickly following Interstate 5's construction in 1967 and has since become one of Oregon's major agricultural centers with significant production of hay, grain, beans, apples, pumpkins and other vegetables. Many local businesses continue to operate today including Starbucks Coffee School District #1and two Barnes & Noble stores as well as many small businesses that have been tucked away behind large warehouses or farmers markets over time like Soapstone Creamery and Pinnacle Fruit Farms among others

The town site is located on the edge of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, and it quickly grew into a mining and agricultural center. In 1911, Hermiston became the first city in Oregon to be incorporated under state law. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II, when it became an important military base for the Pacific Northwest. After the war, Hermiston expanded its boundaries to include portions of present-dayPortland and Salem. In 1980, Hermiston merged with neighboring Portland to form one large city.
