Hermiston is a town in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It was once part of the Rogue River District and now falls within the Hermiston-Wapato School District. The first people to live in what is now Hermiston were the Hidatsa and their allies who crossed the Snake River in 1851. They founded a village on an island in the river about two miles upstream from where Hermiston now stands. The next year, they founded Wapato (now Wapatohea) on land that today forms part of Hermiston-Wapato School District. In 1862, John Condon made his first claim to land east of Mount Hood on what is now Purdy Road. He named itHermiston after his home town of Hermitage, Scotland. The county seat for Clatsop County was moved from Purdy to Hermiston in 1872 when voters approved a new courthouse site just south of present day Hermiston. In 1876, Averill Hancock erected a log cabin near present day Highway 97 and developed it into an early ranching center which became known as Hancockville. After leaving Hancockville for good in 1903, local ranchers continued to operate their properties until 1946 when all but one stopped operating due to economic troubles caused by World War II shortages of feed and other essentials needed for cattle farming operations
Hermon is located in the Wallowa County seat of Hermiston. The town was founded in 1859 by pioneers, and it became a city in 1907. It is the county seat for Wallowa County.
