In 1916, Hermitage School District No. 2 organized with 11 schools and 4 kindergartens; it remains an important educational institution today. The 1920s saw some dramatic changes for Hermiston as large farming families moved into the area from other parts of Oregon or California to take advantage of Prompt service delivery through water tankers for their groceries and produce (the "Hermits" received free deliveries). The community was named for Alessandro Hermiston, a Frenchman who settled in what is now Hermiston in 1847 and became an early settler of this area. The present-day village site was platted in 1864 by Jno. Biddle, a landowner and member of the first formal local government organization in Oregon – the Hermiston Township Association. The community took its name from Mr. Hermiston’s rancho (land grant) on which it sat until 1890; though he did not live to see it developed as a town, his name has been associated with it ever since.
