Hermiston, Oregon is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Hermiston were Native Americans who hunted and gathers around the bend of the Snake River in present-day McMinnville. In 1847, George Atherton founded the town on land that he had purchased from the local tribe of Lummi. Atherton named it for his friend, Hercules Ayerdiceus (1792–1868), an American explorer and member of the Columbia Expedition who had explored much of northwestern Oregon during 1846-1848. Ayerdiceus had traveled through this region on his way to join José de Urquiza y Requería's Mexican army fighting against Napoleonic forces at Yuma Creek about two months earlier when he became lost and wandered into what is today Hermiston. He found a watering place for his horses nearpresent day Hermiston and camped there for several days before returning home with his horse provisions and other supplies weaned him from reliance on horses for transportation across open country. Not knowing where he was or how to get back home, Ayerdiceus decided to wander until he ran out of food or water, which eventually led him south along the Columbia River until he arrived at Tellico Bayou (the modern day site of Portland). There he erected a small shelter made from logs so that he could drink while waiting for news of his family back east which never arrived. After some time without news or help from anyone locally or overland, Ayerdiceus entertained hopes that he might have reached America safely but ultimately perished in terrain too rugged and cold for any human being to survive over winter." In 1850 George Forest started farming hereabouts after moving from nearby Willamette Valley farmsteads where wheat was grown as early as 1824; Forest also raised hay and pigs cropped by settlers before 1860 when such operations were replaced by cotton production following river flooding caused by heavy rains in late fall/early winter each year since then according to USGS topo map dated 1901-02 Northwest corner: . . . ."On Main Street west side" & "On Cemetery Road northeast side", original 1800 boundaries
