In 1904, ThePortland Tribune changed its name to TheOregonianand began publication as a daily newspaper. That year also saw the debut of handgun manufacturing in Hermiston when Wm. Burch & Sons Incorporated founded a firearms plant on South Second Street that produced 1903 revolvers called "Bugles". Bugles were quickly becoming known throughout Southwest Oregon as one of the best handguns available for sporting purposes. In 1911, three men who later became known as pioneers ofHermiston-John Aiken (1860-1941), Rufus Putnam (1867-1946) andburgeoninggun industry-organizedtheFirstNational Sporting Goods Show at what is now Expo Square on First Avenue NE in downtown Hermiston.'At this show,' they introduced many new products including their then new Model 1901 Springfield rifle.'The fair also served as an opportunitytoshowoffARMSTRONG arms made by local manufacturers.'It was during this Fair that John Aiken built his first armory on Southeast Fourth Street near present day Sweeny Hall School). Hermiston is a small town in the Thetford Range of the Columbia Mountains, about midway between Portland and Seattle. It had a population of 707 in 2010. Herbstons first settler was Cyrus Eaton in 1853. The community was named after David Hermiston, an early settler who homesteaded there in 1863. Herbston's post office was established on December 12, 1872, and received its present name on February 1, 1903. The townsite was patented to the town on November 3, 1886 by J.D. Sowers and Wm Horsfall. The town has been incorporated twice: once on January 24, 1907 (from portions of Beaverton), and again on October 10, 1992 (from parts of Hermiston). The Hermiston School District encompasses all of Hermiston except for a few scattered parcels within the city limits of Portland which are managed by the Portland school district pursuant to state law governing local government associations charters or districts with special taxing powers. The main industry in Hermiston is agriculture: hay production account for most of the manufacturing capacity; cattle are also common feed sources; some fruit trees are grown here; some vegetables are grown as well; but most residents rely heavily upon tourism for their economy. In recent years there has been development around sport fishing along both the Willamette River and numerous small creeks that flow through southeastern Oregon; fly fishing is popular especially among anglers from southern Oregon counties including Baker County who often travel down into Douglas County to fish there during late fall and winter when commissioners’ budgets allow for such activities
Hermiston was founded in 1858 by Reuben and Rachel Wickersham. The town grew quickly, and by 1869 had a population of 350 people. In the 1870s, Hermiston became an agricultural center with crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes, and oats. The town also produced horses and dogs for meatpacking companies. In 1880, the Hermiston Railroad was built to bring goods to the town from nearby cities. The Vail-Langley Railway arrived in Hermiston in 1898, followed by the Portland-Oregon Railway in 1903. The railroad helped Hermiston become a city in 1902. In 1916, Herbstons first school opened; it later became the Oregon School District #2 High School. In 1922, Hermiston's first library opened; it later became the Oregon Library District #1 Library. In 1951, the city of Hermiston merged with Tillamook County to form Tillamook County Regional Airport Authority.
