In 1870, Hermann Anker established an sawmill at Hermiston which became one of the largest mills in Oregon during this time period. Anker also began developing a dry goods store/merchandise market which developed into what is today Nordstroms department store on Fifth Avenue between Mercer Street and Sarno Road NW in downtown Hermiston. For many years it was one of the most important retail outlets in town though storefronts were gradually replaced by larger stores around 1990-2000 when Hermiston took off as an economic center due to its unique geographic location as well as its access to Interstate 5 and other transportation options
Hermiston was founded in 1864 by Captain G.W. Baird as a small village on the banks of the Willamette River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1876 it became a city Limits. In 1916, Hermiston annexed the neighboring town of La Grande and in 1928 the towns of Echo and Santiam merged into Hermiston.
