In 1928 it merged with Portland's Jardine Manufacturing Company to become Portland Railway & Machine Works Incorporated (PRMW), one of the largest employers in town with over 1,500 employees including artists, architects and engineers who designed railway tracks and bridges across the Willamette River into Portland proper; PRMW also built several churches in town during this time including First Baptist Church which is still active today In 1942 Pacific War veteran Harry S Truman married Betty Beaumont Hodges at Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church on Northeast Sixth Avenue in Hermiston after being rejected by more than 100 high school girls he had tried out for her before her parents closed their home down so he could get an education while they attended war bonds sales nearby Hermiston's economy declined following World War II but has slowly redeveloped since then thanks to its proximity to OSU andPortland Railway & Machine Works Incorporated's involvement in downtown redevelopment projects such as The Uptown complex which includes a grocery store/cafeteria/bar/lounge/theater/parking garage etc., as well as new construction such as the $US200 million Washington County Courthouse which opened in 2006
