Hermiston is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Deschutes County seat and is located on the banks of the Deschutes River. The community was founded in 1871 by John A. Hermiston and his wife Anna C. Hermiston as a farmstead on what is now known as Hermit Road. In 1886, John A.'s brother-in-law, George Hoyle, donated land to form what is now Hermiston School District #2. The original school house still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 5 near its intersection with North Loop Boulevard. In 1907, Harry Fenton established a post office in Hermiston with mail service from Portland via stagecoach to hermit farmers in central Oregon. By 1911, when Hermiston had a grocery store and several homes, it had reached its current size of about 400 people including 150 men who worked for Fenton's meatpacking company which included packinghouses on both sides of the river where goods were unloaded onto barges for shipment upstream to other customers such as pork processors and flour mills. A bridge over the Deschutes River was built in 1922 by local contractor Jerald Buhler Jr., who also built two churches (Anglican and Methodist) in town; one remains standing today while the other has been demolished and replaced by a shopping center that occupies most of its former site. In 1951, Hermiston's first high school opened after being approved by voters with $5 per pupil funding through an act of Congress signed into law by President Harry S Truman; it served students until 1985 when it closed due to budgetary reasons following state budget cuts that impacted many schools throughout Oregon). A second high school opened in 1990 but closed within five years due to budget problems unique to Oregon rural schools at that time; this too was followed by an effort to open a new high school but this never came off; finally only three elementary schools remain extant within their district: Hermit Elementary School serving students pre-K through 6th grades (opened 1971), Eastside Elementary School serving 7th through 8th grade (opened 1978), Westside Elementary School serving 9th through 10th grades (opened 1983). Today there are only three low income housing developments withinHermistown area: Southview Manor which serves residents below poverty level living close to jobs or services etc., Ellington Manor which provides affordable housing units including Owner/Operators floor plans & shared amenities for up-to 30+ families & accessable garages/yards w/carport or pull out driveway for RV parking etc., Happy Hollow development providing supportive courtyardhousing units located adjacent to businesses open late etc.; all other developments are made up of single family detached homes typical across all rural American communities without any attached garage or yard space available

Hermiston was founded in 1887 by John Atherton and his wife who named it for Mount Helens which is located in central Washington. In 1951, the town adopted a resolution to change its name to Hermiston after John Atherton's death but it never happened. In 1909, a post office called Hermiston was established and remained in operation until 1996. The first settler in Hermiston was John Atherton who arrived there with his family from Wallowa County, Oregon on July 6th, 1887. He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of Highway 97 and Third Street. The area that corresponds to present day Hermiston was first populated by Native Americans including the Chinook Indians and their allies such as The Wiyot Tribe who resided around Lick Creek west of where modern-day Hermiston lies. In 1861 French traders started trading with Clatsop Indians along the Snake River close to present day Olympia. Some of these traders may have been associated with Pierre Dorion who operated a fur trading post east of present day Hermiston on Dunlap Creek from about 1800 until he died circa 1836 according to one source However no evidence exists supporting this claim and it is more likely that Dorion only traded furs with local tribes rather than directly dealing with any specific group or people

The town began to grow rapidly after it was developed as a center for cattle and grain production. In 1916, the Hermiston-based Standard Oil Company merged with another Oregon company, Occidental Petroleum, forming the Occidental Petroleum Corporation. In 1970, Occidental Petroleum merged with Texaco to form ChevronTexaco.
