Happy Valley is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, situated on the banks of the Snake River. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Eugene Metropolitan Statistical Area. Happy Valley is located about east of Portland and south of Eugene. The town was named for General Joseph Happy, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Oregon. In 1881, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near Happy Valley, and soon afterwards began to mine ore from the hills around the settlement. The town began to grow gradually after World War II when people started moving into its area because of new irrigation projects approved by Governor Sloat. By 1990, most residents had left for other parts of Oregon or countries across the world because of economic reasons or during military conflicts such as Cambodia's Civil War (1979-1985). Today, Happy Valley remains a small but vibrant community with diverse cultural experiences that include art galleries, restaurants and nightlife options. It also has a strong emphasis on education which has led to partnerships with local schools including Mountain View Elementary School and Central High School. more
