At that point, many people chose not to donate again due to what they saw as an unfairness in the situation. As a result, poverty increased in Happy Valley and schools closed their doors; something that never happened before during public school funding protests in Oregon (Fischer et al., 2003). Despite these challenges, over time village members have rallied together and rebuilt their economy using various methods including marketing online and real estate investments (Fischer et al., 2003).
