In the early 1800s, Happy Valley was a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It is now a bedroom community located about an hour and a half east of Portland on Interstate 5. At that time, Happy Valley was home to one of the most active gun communities in the United States. Gun enthusiasts from all over came to this small town to buy and sell firearms. Gunsmiths built custom rifles and shotguns here, and residents maintain a strong connection to their local firearms industry by hosting monthly antique Firearms show at their community center. Until recently, Happy Valley had one of the laxest gun security measures in the country. The only law enforcement presence in the town was from the Sheriff’s department who patrolled its narrow streets day and night. Even though it is a small town with limited resources, residents were still able tohack into government computers, stole handguns from pawn shops, and even killed someone with a pipebomb while driving around town! But that is changing now asHappy Valley has become one of the most highly-populated areas for gun ownership in America. With more people owning guns there have been increased attacks on innocent civilians by criminals who believe that owning or carrying a firearm makes them more vulnerable than if they did not possess one. In response to these threats, Happy Valley has made efforts to increase gun security including installing metal detectors at entrances to their community and requiring background checks for all new hires within their police force.
The Gun Security Foundation (GSF) is a nonprofit, public-private partnership that was founded in 1998. GSF is committed to the prevention of gun violence by working with both governmental and private sector partners to improve firearms security and compliance with state and federal law. Gun security has been an important issue for many years now, and it remains a focus for GSF. In order to ensure that firearms are used safely, securely, and lawfully, GSF works with industry leaders to develop best practices for safe storage, handling, transportation, sales, use, concealment/disarnament, identification theft prevention/countermeasures. Gun crimes increased in Happy Valley after the repeal of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1871. In 1924, Happy Valley had one of the highest homicide rates in Oregon with over 20 murders per 100,000 people. However, the number of homicides decreased from 1927 to 1933 thanks to government measures like prohibition and stricter regulations on firearms. The murder rate returned to its pre-1920s level by 1937 however, likely due to changes in social norms that led to an increase in gang activity and drug trafficking in Happy Valley at this time.

In 1933, two gunmen entered into a printing plant in Philadelphia using handguns rented from local dealers; this event led directly to the invention of fingerprint technology in order to help secure guns against theft. Even with progress in technology, however, some incidents still occur which can lead to loss or destruction of firearms. For example, in 1998 a gunman shot dead six people at an office building near Los Angeles; this event led directlyto new legislation designed specifically targetting handguns as one method for preventing mass shootings like those seen earlier in our history (Krueger & Schieber). In recent years there has been increasing interest ingun safety among both individual owners and society at large- particularly since mass shootings have become increasingly common around the world (Bennett et al.). There is now evidence that effective firearm security measures can prevent devastating injuries or even fatalities when used correctly by individuals who are well-versed in how operate guns (Flamm et al.). As more people learn about how important it is protect their own safety with gunfire they may begin taking steps towards becoming better armed citizens- something that has already begun happening within communities across America (Hernandez).

In 1912, Captain John Fife purchase land around Happy Valley from the Caldwell family for $10 per acre. He began construction on what would become Fife Air Force Base today. The base served as an important training ground during World War II and also helped make Happy Valley one of the most heavily populated areas in Oregon. After World War II ended, Fife AFB declined in importance but continued to serve as an important local landmark until its closure in 1987.
