The chain lock consisted of a padlock with two links that were connected by a hinge, allowing it to be opened with one hand. During the 18th century, gun locks began to become more common in Europe. One of the most famousgunlocks of this period was the Schlosser lock, which was invented in 1785 by Johann Friedrich Schlosser. TheSchlosser lock featured a keyhole on one side and an exterior keyhole on the other side. It could be opened with either hand and allowed guns to be locked up with just a single key. The popularity of gun locks declined during the 19th century, however, due to advances in technology such as fingerprint recognition and metal detectors. The area was first settled by Europeans in the late 18th century, and began to grow rapidly in the early 19th century as a result of agriculture and transportation improvements. By 1848, Happy Valley had reached its current size, and became an important stop on the Oregon Trail. In 1930, Happy Valley was designated a National Historic Landmark. The history of Happy Valley begins with settlers who arrived in what is now Oregon in the late 18th century. For many years, it was thought that these people were Native Americans who converted to Christianity. However, DNA evidence has since revealed that these settlers were actually European immigrants from Scotland and Northern Ireland who came overland through Siberia into present-day Oregon. The first European to live permanently in Happy Valley was James MacKenzie, who arrived in 1792. At first he only stocked up on supplies for his own family but soon started trading with other pioneers across the Columbia River. In 1830, when Congress passed an act authorizing surveyors to explore new frontiers south of California (the “Oregon Treaty”), MacKenzie applied for land within what is now Oregon. He found himself at odds with another settler named John McLoughlin; McCloughlin claimed that he had purchased all of what is now Happy Valley from Native American occupants some time prior (a claim which has been disputed). The two men fought a pitched battle near present-day McNary Bridge over the Snake River shortly after McLoughlin’s purchase announcement. As a result of this altercation, both men lost their possessions and their Mt Hood cattle ranching business went bankrupt (although some accounts claim that McCloughlin did not lose much). Just three years later, however, MacKenzie had successfully obtained title to 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of riverfront property between present-day Junction City and Beaverton from Washington County sheriff George Haines—a significant accomplishment given that at this time there were no rivers or streams running along present-day Oregon’s eastern border! This land would become known as Happy Valley because it lay largely undisturbed until its designation as a National Historical Landmark in 1930.) Happy Valley, Oregon was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and his family. The town was named for the happy valley where they found gold. The first post office in Happy Valley was established in 1851. In 1865, Happy Valley became a city and remained so until 1959 when it merged with nearby Albany to form the current city of Eugene.
