Happy Valley is located in the heart of Oregon’s wine country, and itshistory goes back to 1875. At that time, the area was part of the Multnomah County government and there were few public firearms stores. The first gun light show was held at a local hotel in 1895. It was a small affair with only a couple hundred spectators. In 1937, Happy Valley became an incorporated town and began to sell guns for personal use. In 1945, Happy Valley passed a law allowing concealed carry without a permit. Gun lights began to be exhibited at local events beginning in 1951. By 1957, Happy Valley had its own annual gun show which attracted as many as twenty thousand spectators. In 1978, Happy Valley voted to become an open-carry state and began to allow any person over the age of 21 to possess firearms without a license or permit. At this point, gun lights had spread throughout Oregon and were becoming more common than ever before. Today,gunlights are still Displayed at local events throughout Happy Valley (and surrounding counties) as part of our community’s rich history!
