Happy Valley is an unincorporated community in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The name is derived from the Happy Valley Railroad stop on the Clackamas River. The community was founded in 1892 and named after a valley near Mount Hood. The first permanent settler in Happy Valley was John Fenton, who purchased land east of present-day Happy Valley and developed it into a small town. He named his settlement after the valley he had just traveled through on horseback, which he described as "a beautiful tract of country lying to the south of Portland." In 1893, Fenton's son-in-law Philip Waddell bought 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of Happy Valley from Fenton and began developing it into what is now known as Happy Valley Township. By 1907, there were only 10 residents living in Happy Valley Township; by 1912, there were only six people remaining. In 1916, Happy Valley became part of Clackamas County when it was organized from portions of Multnomah County. It remained an unincorporated community until its annexation by Portland in 1963. As part of city annexation plans for that year, much land within present-dayHappyValley were annexed to Portland including Waddell's original 640 acres (2 km²).
