Gresham, Oregon is a small town located in Multnomah County, Oregon. The population was 2,611 at the2010 census. Gresham is home to the Gresham Museum and Park and the Salem-Gresham Chamber of Commerce. The community is named after Salmon P. Gresham, an early settler in the area. The first Europeans to explore what is now Multnomah County were Spanish traders, looking for new land to trade with. They landed on the site of today's Gresham in 1788 and called it San Juan Bautista de los Padres (St John's Bay). In 1836, James Kapp set up a ferry service from his farmstead on Willamette River near present day Portland to connect with Sitka Harbor on Kodiak Island. This gave him access to Strait of Juan de Fuca which he desired for export crops such as wheat and barley. After Kapp died in 1847, his son Andrew took over management of the ferry service and began shipping goods back and forth between Portland and Kodiak Island until 1850 when he sold it to George Vancouver who built a wharf next door at what is now downtown Gresham. Vancouver used part of the wharf for his mill while others became homes for local people and businesses including Andrew's father-in-law Solomon Porter who ran a tannery on Broadway Street SE until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire; this marked the first time that earthenware manufacturing had been established in Gresham! In 1872 Douglas Farnish founded The Pacific Recycling Company Ltd., one of America's earliest recycling companies - Favre & Farnish recycles aluminum cans into buildinguminum frames! In 1944 Expo '44 brought over 1 million people to Portland during World War II which led to an increase in business opportunities for many local businesses including fertilizer company Western Farms Incorporated which moved its headquarters from North Bend to GresHAM in 1945! By 1960 there were more than 100 businesses operating in downtown GRESHAM with a population of 5,000! In 1957 Donny Farrell opened Harry's Publick House which became popular among locals because they could order any drink they wanted without having to go out! That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as "the mall", consisting of three blocks containing more than 50 stores including JCPenney anchor storers Sears Roebuck & Co., DuPontCo., Macy’s Inc., JBL audio/video storeiers Columbia Records storeiers (now Sam Ash), A&P Pharmacy anchors Wacoal anchors Sears Outlet storeiers (now Kohl’s) along with several small convenience stores occupied by Safeway supermarket chain!. During its peak occupancy around 1980-1981 there were 300 jobs available at Harry's Publick House! In 1994 development began on what would become known as Community Plaza – currently home to numerous restaurants, cafes, shops etc.. Work eventually ceased due largelyto budget cuts but some aspects such as roofing continues under new ownership as Ofir Atallah leases space from Multnomah County Water District!!! In 2001 nearly all original retail buildings within Community Plaza closed down following heavy rainstorms resulting in flooding throughout much of Downtown...This has left much unused storefrontspace within Community Plaza redevelopment plans!!! Today few if any active businesses remain within Community Plaza apart from One Stop Shopping plaza across First Avenue from city hall!!
