Gresham was an agricultural town located in the U.S. state of Oregon, on the Snake River. The population was 2,895 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town located within Gresham City limits. The first permanent settler in what is now Gresham was Tom Mix in 1847. He and his family built a log cabin on the site of present-day downtown Gresham and started to farm land around it. In 1850, David Fenton arrived from Illinois with his family and began to develop some of the property that would later become downtown Gresham. By 1853, all of Gresham had been platted out and named for Elisha Gray Gresham (1796-1868), an American lawyer who had served as justice of the peace for Multnomah County, Oregon Territory from 1841 to 1852 and as county attorney from 1853 to 1861. In 1863, George Stephenson bought part of Fenton's land and founded Stephenson & Stephenson lumber company which developed much of present-day downtown Gresham into its current form including construction of the original State Bank Building (now occupied by PNC bank) in 1865; largest building in town at that time. Loggers also used parts of what is now Old Main Street between Second Avenue Southeast and Third Avenue Southeast when they harvested trees nearresent day Pioneer Square throughout most of the 19th century. The first school in what is now GresHAM was built just northwest corner Third Avenue SE on a lot donated by Mrs Mary Silliman in 1865; this building still stands today (although it has been moved several times). The post office opened at 6th Ave NE on November 1st, 1870; this building still stands today but has been removed numerous times over the years due to its age and condition - currently being stored inside a barn inside city limits! The original courthouse burned down on July 3rd 1902 while being renovated inside by then Governor John Aiken during his administration – causing extensive damage to both structure and materials! After four years reconstruction under new leadership commenced with completion late in 1906; this old courthouse again served as our central meeting place until it burned down again around 1970 (!); this time leaving no lasting legacy behind except for some ruined infrastructure remains today! One early pioneer resident who left quite an impression upon history was Portlandian banker Jerald Wickershaft who made large donations towards restoration projects following a fire that destroyed much historic civic architecture throughoutPortland however only one square block remained standing salvageable following rebuild efforts !! This included demolition/reconstruction/reclamation/updating/replacement or renovation/initial occupancyof more than 50 buildings across NW Portland area !! All those contributions have resulted in many excellent schools, parks etc., not just IN Portland !!
Gresham, Oregon was founded in 1847 by John Gresham and his brother James. The town was named for the Gresham family's holdings in the area, including a farmstead on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1855, Gresham became part of Washington County and was renamed after George Vancouver, the first British settler in what is now Oregon.
