Gresham, Oregon is a town in the U.S. state of Oregon located on the Snake River Plain about 120 miles (193 km) south of Portland and 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Salem. The town was founded by John Prentiss Gresham and his wife Louise on November 3, 1855 as a small community near what is now Interstate 5 just outside of Salem. The current name comes from John Prentiss Gresham's slogan "Oregon First" which he put into effect in order to promote growth and development within the community while still adhering to its principles of local control and responsibility. The downtown area was built up rapidly during World War II due to military production being centered there; today it retains much of its original architecture including two large stores fronts on Commercial Street and three other buildings that were once used for government agencies such as the old jail and post office complex. The nearby campus of Gresham College has helped create an active downtown core complete with several businesses and services along Commercial Street that are open 24/7 including 24-hour grocery store, bank branch, bike shop, hair salon/barber shop, bakery/pizza place etc.; all close at night so that you can get some peace & quiet after work or school! Gresham, Oregon was formed in 1853 by the merger of two small towns, Gresham and Hermiston. The town was named for General David Gresham, a U.S. Army officer who served in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Oregon. The first store in Gresham opened in 1854. Growth continued to be slow until 1861, when construction began on the first courthouse in Oregon. By 1865, Gresham had a population of 100 people and had attracted attention from settlers throughout the region because of its strategic location on a high mountain ridge between Eugene and Salem counties. In 1907, Gresham became part of Junction City County when it was organized from parts of Lane and Douglas counties. The county seat moved to Redmond in 1920; however, due to population growth over that period, Junction City County remained an important center for business and government until it merged into Multnomah County in 1959. Today, Gresham is a small town with a strong cultural heritage that has emerged as one of the most vibrant communities within the greater Portland area. It is home to many businesses such as Microsoft Corporation’s bureau headquarters (built as part of another project initiated by then-Mayor Bruce Harrell), several theaters including CenturyLink Field’s new football stadium (the site where former Portland Timber FC striker Diego Valeri scored his goal against Liverpool FC last May), and several luxury hotels including Hyatt RegencyPortland Airport Resort & Spa and Marriott Marquis Seattle Bellevue King Edward Hotel/Restaurant). Additionally, there are numerous restaurants serving local cuisine such as pho or pizza; bars; media outlets such as KGW Channel 8 News Channel 5; educational institutions such asOregon State University–Beaverton Campus; Service Employees International Union Local 2710 (SEIU) office building which houses various Democratic Party organizations; dozens of smaller businesses catering specifically to residents within walking distance including lawn care services, pet stores, bicycle shops etc.; golf courses located close by including PGA Tour golf course Beaverton Hills Golf Club; Portland State University's School Of Law complex which includes one large law library (the largest single law library outside Washington D.C.) among other buildings not immediately visible from Main Street but also contains classrooms used by OSU students enrolled at neighboring schools like Portland Community College
