The town site was surveyed by George Washington Smith in March 1851 and platted by him on May 11th that year. The name “Gresham” was chosen for its similarity to nearby Salem, England – thus giving rise to the popular misconception that Gresham originated with English Settlement activity hereabouts. In fact, there were no English Settlers in or around Gresham until after American Independence when many British immigrants began arriving here following the California Gold Rush and developing these areas as agricultural settlements. A post office called Gresham had been established in October 1850 but discontinued operations on January 7th 1861 due to high postage rates charged by mail carriers at that time. A new post office called Salem opened on July 24th 1861 under postal jurisdiction of Portland and remained open until May 3rd 1922 when it closed because of bombings during World War I which destroyed much of downtown Portland at that time including most of the old Presbyterian Church building which still stands today as one of several unique survivor structures from this period within downtown Portland.) In 1862 Daniel Webster built a sawmill which continues operation to this day; it is one of only a few such mills still standing in Oregon along with those located at Bend and Hood River counties.. In 1865 Nathaniel Jarvis Green built a store next door to his mill; this store remains extant today as part of Pacific Northwest Bank Corporation headquarters complex across U Street from where it once stood beside Pioneer Courthouse Square.. In 1865 another store also became extant near what is now Everett High School; this store also operated successfully until 1963 when it caught fire resulting in loss Of life among both firefighters and shoppers inside.. By 1870 there were six stores locales having collectively served nearly 4,000 customers while two other general stores had opened up locally but failed within three years.. In 1875 Jeptha Goodyear started production at his silo factory northwest of town soon followed by his brother Horace Goodyear Sr.; these companies are responsible for some important aspects associated with early industrial development here including manufacture/distribution feedstocks for various chemical plants throughout southeast Oregon during World War II.)
