A year later, he named it after himself - George Hargrave's Settlement (now part of Portland). In 1855, Captain John Teller set up his store in what is now downtown Gresham. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in Gresham! In 1862, General Alexander McClellan arrived in Oregon as part of the Union army during the American Civil War and decided to move his headquarters from Seattle to Portland because of its strategic location near points of opportunity for Confederate troops retreating across the Columbia River into Canada. He ordered his army's Quartermaster General Samuel Freeman not to send any supplies or reinforcements eastward into Oregon because he didn't want them getting caught up in war with China! This decision angered many Portlandians who saw themselves as being left behind by McClellan's success while their wealthy neighbor north of Interstate 5 continued to thrive during wartime conditions! In 1865, aftermath of Grant's Overland Expedition made it necessary for General Sherman to cross over country west of Omaha before moving on downriver towards St Louis (then known as Vicksburg) – an event that locals refer to today as "the March To The Sea." Because much material had been destroyed by battle or weather along Route 66 – including bridges and entire towns – settlers began building anew along Whatcom County Road 622 between Mount Adams Cemetery and present day Hood River before Sherman reached them on October 17th 1865 (just days after reaching Omaha!). The new community quickly sprang up around what are now Old Mill Road & Noontime Creek Parkway - dubbed "The Promised Land" by local boosters – with homes being built within 10 miles of where they would stand tomorrow! Today you can still see evidence OF this early development through drive-thru windows/stubbies at local fast food restaurants! From here things got really interesting… On October 11th 1870 Jens Jensen established an isolated farmstead called Gehlerville about twelve miles northeast cornering Old Mill Rd./Noontime Creek Parkway just southOf Mt Adams Cemetery & east Of Umpqua Valley Rd On November 8 th 1870 Gehlerville became known as 'Greshome' After purchasing 640 acres adjoining Mt Adams Cemetery from Wm Hickey For $1 per acre
