He built a log cabin on the banks of the Willamette River which is now known as Green Street. Today, there are several buildings that date back to when Gresham was an agricultural center with a variety of crops being grown including sweet potatoes, wheat, beans, corn, carrots, peas and other vegetables. The community grew rapidly due to its location next to major rivers and transportation connections which made it easy for traders to sell goods and services throughout Oregon. In 1878 William Blackmore donated land adjacent to Green Street for the creation of University Park which became one of America's most important universities. In 1893 Union Pacific Railroad constructed a depot on Wilson Boulevard just east of Center Street which served as headquarters for many railroads across Oregon until 1915 when it moved to Portland along with other locomotives during World War I . The area around University Park became known as "The Campus" after that time because so much research took place there including studies focused on agriculture and engineering . In 1924 University Park merged with nearby Salem State College creating one of Oregon's largest college campuses .
