They were eventually joined by other groups until they had a total population of around 100 people. The first settlers developed a small adobe farm near present-day downtown Gresham which they called "Brenton." In 1898, local lawyer George R. Gresham donated land along CR 1508 (now Main Street) to make room for a new city hall and school district. The city's growth stopped after World War II when the military withdrew from Oregon and most of its residents moved away.
