Gresham is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 30,834 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County. Gresham is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Oregon State Route 128 passes through Gresham, leading south to Salem and north to Portland. The Multnomah River runs through the city, providing a source of drinking water for many homes and businesses in Gresham and other parts of the city. The first settlers in what is now Gresham arrived in 1859 during the US Lewis & Clark Expedition as part of their trip across North America. They named their new community after Nicholas-Jacques Gresham, an Englishman who had settled in Oregon several years earlier on land that became Riddle Park. At that time, much of what is now Multnomah County was included within Spanish territory controlled by Mexico City. When American independence was achieved in 1848, Mexico ceded most of its possessions east of the Rocky Mountains to US control; including Oregon's eastern half including Gresham and its namesake Nicolas-Jacques Gresham (the first European settler). In 1872–73, investors purchased portions of Riddle Park from Nicholas-Jacques Gresham for $8000 dollars and developed it into what is today known as downtown Gresham with its five blocks long main street running perpendicular to Willamette Boulevard which served as a commercial center for farmers markets, general stores and other small businesses until about 1925 when diagonal streets were built parallel to each other along First Avenue (now SW Morrison Street) between Columbia Street and Interstate 5 where large shopping centers were built before eventually annexing neighboring neighborhoods such as East Elmhurst on SW Morrison Street near Interstate 5 exit 134B/C while still honoring neighborhood boundaries similar to those still existing today despite having been spilt off into numerous subdivisions over time – all without any public hearings or vote being taken back then! In 1967 referendum passage by voters demonstrated overwhelming support for annexation if approved by government officials but no annexation took place due largely because then Mayor Bruce Ratner overruled Laddie Olson who wanted downtown annexed onto easternmost alley between First Avenue NE & NW Jefferson Streets rather than maintain separate neighborhoods like they have since! One possible reason why this occurred could be traced back to then City Manager Don Auerbach’s desire not only shamelessly selfpromote his job performance but also try and curry favoritism from powerful political figures he felt would be supportive given his links with some establishment organizations like Area B Radio Corporation who owned Worthy News radio station at that time! However it seems more likely that business interests were more influential than official policy considerations when it comes to matters pertaining Downtown annexation which unfortunately continued until 1985 despite repeated efforts by successive mayors culminating with current Mayor Chris Coleman trying unsuccessfully last year again!! It should be noted though that even without formal annexation proceedings going forward there has been sporadic development taking place within Downtown boundaries ever since including: initial phases led by entrepreneurs Orville Noyes and Bill McKnight followed by later phases led by developers such as Dan Gilbert; John Hanley; Jed Kolko; Rick Knopper etc.; finally becoming fully operational following Measure 97 passed last November making Downtown redevelopment one major focus among local elected officials currently working towards revitalization whose success will ultimately depend on growth potential emanating from both retail corridors stretching eastward along Willamette Boulevard extending deep into Southeast Portland adjacent thereto experiencing high levels Of pedestrian traffic generated BY THE CITY OF GLENDALE APPEARANCE INDICATING THAT REAL ESTATE VALUE HAS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER TIME WITH NO CONVENTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROVIDING FINAL ASSISTANCE NEEDED TO SUPPORT THIS SHEET OF BUSINESSES
