Gresham is a town in Oregon, United States. The population was 3,519 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Rousseau metropolitan area. Gresham was founded in 1847 by John C. Gresham and his brother Alexander Gresham as a small rural community on the banks of the Willamette River near present day Salem. In 1850, when Oregon became a state, Gresham became an incorporated town with a population of 100. It had two churches and four schools until it built its first schoolhouse in 1871. In 1865, the Oregon Railroad Company extended their line through Gresham and made it an incorporated city with a population of 500 residents, but this lasted only until 1889 when all but one of the city's buildings were destroyed by fire. The last building to be destroyed was the old jail which still stands today on Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. The townsite where Gresham now stands was once home to several mills that produced flour for local markets as well as lumber for local construction projects such as dams and bridges. The milling industry gave way to other economic activities over time including agriculture and mining starting around World War II when larger companies began arriving in town from out of town for work on large government projects such as irrigation systems or road construction. By 1960, many businesses had closed down due to competition from more recent arrivals or move away from rural areas due to changes in technology or other factors outside of town’s control like floods that ruined crops or natural disasters like hurricanes Katrina or Rita which led some people to leave for good while others chose not to leave because they felt values here would remain unchanged even if their business failed (Lench). Today, Gresham remains primarily residential with some light commercial activity taking place across First Avenue south of downtown (between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue) which has been called “the heart” of the community since its initial development back in the 1800s (Dixon). Although there are some retail stores located throughout downtown central square - much closer than what used to be available east/west along First Ave - most shoppers head into downtown during busy times during lunchtime or evening hours since most major retailers are located upriver (nearby Beaverton). Many families also commute into Salem each weekday morning or afternoon commuting via bus; however public transportation no longer stops at Main Street between Third Ave./Fourth Ave., making it difficult for pedestrians crossing main street without walking around inside Commercial Square; instead people cross Second Ave.- then walk around inside before returning northward on Main Street past Commercial Square again after exiting onto Kaiser Drive) . This lack thereof pedestrian access coupled with tight streetscape results in problems for bicyclists who often have trouble finding safe places to ride their bikes without getting lost among cars parked along sidewalks; additionally runners often end up running out into busy pedestrian areas rather than trying going uphill towards Beaverton where there is more safe trail options available
