Gresham, Oregon is a small town located in Polk County, Oregon. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Gresham is part of the Salem-Keizer Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Gresham comes from the first settlers in the area, who named it after their hometown of Gresham, England. The community was founded in 1853 by Methodist missionaries and pioneers who traveled through that region looking for land to settle. By 1870, Gresham had become a commercial center with flour mills and other businesses lining Main Street. In 1907, the city of Salem annexed Gresham and its surrounding townships making it a municipality with its own government and schools. In 1915, John Riggins became mayor of Gresham becoming one of only two men to serve as mayor consecutive terms (the other being Clarence Dicken). During his time as mayor, he helped establish a park system which includes what is now Roosevelt Park on North Main Street. He also spearheaded efforts to build the present day courthouse which was completed in 1925 and seats 300 people within its walls. During World War II, many residents served in military service including Mayor Riggins' brother-in-law Harry Pogue who served as an Air Force lieutenant colonel during World War II. After the war ended 1945 there were few opportunities for employment so many residents opted to stay away from work or move into smaller homes. Some new businesses opened up such as American Legion Hall which became known as The Market Place due to its location next to the local post office where citizens could buy goods that they would then sell at their home or business storefronts until around 1960 when supermarket chains took over this space leaving The Market Place empty until it was razed in 2001 along with most of adjacent buildings built between 1910-1920 when Salem annexed Gresham creating today's thriving downtown core with many specialty stores as well as restaurants and bars offering various types of cuisine all while preserving some older architecture examples such as TheMarketPlace building itself still standing providing views over downtown while larger hotels have replaced much of historicresidential structure since annexationretaining some older architectural details such as original storefronts

During this time period, pistol magazines also started becoming less common as artillery ammunition became available that could easily fill them up (this happened around 1915). The city also attracted businesses such as meat packing plants, lumber yards and prisons. However, during the 1970s and 1980s Gresham experienced a significant decline in population due to economic recession and social unrest. Today, however, the community is rebound with strong economic opportunity and a growing appreciation for cultural experiences.
The Gresham area was first settled in the early 1800s. The area became a important logging and farming center after the discovery ofcoal and timber in the region. In 1853, the Oregon General Assembly passed an act that granted land to farmers in Gresham for use as farmland. The town was founded on December 17, 1854, by settlers from Portland. It grew quickly due to its location and quality of life. By 1870, Gresham had a population of over 1,500 people. The town declined during the late 19th century due to population growth in other cities and towns in Oregon. However, it regained its status as a major agricultural center during the 1920s and 1930s due to new irrigation systems and better transportation options.
