Gresham is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 25,643 at the 2010 census. Gresham is the principal city of the Gresham–Bridgewater metropolitan area which has a population of 49,871 as of 2018. A post-office called Gresham was established in 1879, and remained in operation until 1906. The name comes from Welsh gwershon meaning "a kind of flour." A mill built by early settlers here produced flour for local markets and also exported to Portland and other parts of Oregon. In 1887 the town site was surveyed and laid out by Samuel Merrill with advice from J.D.Snyder, who had just founded Salem as the county seat. The townspeople chose to call their new community Gresham after nearby Bridgwater (now part of Salem). By 1890 there were 7 businesses in town--the only one being a schoolhouse--and a small family farm provided most food for all 9 inhabitants and their animals. In 1896 erosion caused part of the bank on which town stood to collapse; this led to replacementof entire banks throughout the community during that decade with masonry construction supplemented by metal plates affixed with wire mesh to create an even stronger bank—a first in Oregon. Flour production followed suit soon afterward; by 1907 Gresham's two mills accounted for more than 60% of all Multnomah County flour exports The advent of World War I forced many people out of their homes; however, they returned later when war production resumed In 1923 Multnomah County became independent as a separate state; Gresham became its county seat In 1951 City Hall was completed; it replaced an earlier building designed by George Washington Carver In 1958 Transportation Minister John Latham announced plans for Interstate 5 through downtown Gresham In 1965Multnomah County voters rejected secession from Oregon Gresham started off small but quickly grew into one half million person metropolis due largely to its location on I-5 between Portland & Salem proper! It wasn't until World War II that things really took off: not only did WWII demand lots more flour here but also munitions manufacturing because so much combat happened right near our borders! Afterward everything slowed down again until we got into some really bad times thanks to recession overpopulation (along with lackadaisicalness) .... But things have come alive again now that we're finally blessedly doing better economically thanks mostly to housing developments like Bridgeport Place & Newport Beach Plaza... We should keep pushing forward & taking risks because if we don't do something great our biggest threat will be us ourselves

Gresham was founded in 1847 by Captain George Vancouver and his brother-in-law Lt. James McLoughlin. Gresham's first post office opened in 1850. The town grew rapidly during the early days of World War II as local manufacturers produced goods for military use. Gresham became an important center for aircraft manufacturing and feedstock production during World War II; it also developed into a major agricultural center with dairy, poultry, and corn production. After the war, Gresham experienced a period of decline which saw its population reduce from its peak of 7,000 to 2,500 by 2000. However, recent growth has led to increasing development within Gresham and new attractions such as a new elementary school and park built in 2002 just west of the city limits
