Although it had no railroad access until 1907, Gresham quickly became known as the "Gateway toOregon" because of its location on Interstate 5 and its many attractions including several mines (including White Sands Gold Mine), factories (including Willamette Paper Company), and theaters (such as The Strand Theatre). In 1938, when Interstate 5 was expanded into what is now Multnomah County, Gresham became one of the first communities along I-5 to be served by state highway traveling through town center on wide shoulders rather than having streets narrowed down to single lanes like most other communities along I-5. However, despite all these successes during recent decades - including becoming home to numerous high-tech companies - there remain some key challenges facing Gresham today: housing prices are extremely high relative to neighboring townships; transportation options are limited; business opportunities are few or nonexistent; public services are often not well maintained oruntuated; and there is significant poverty among local residents.
The first people to settle Gresham were the Nisga'a in 1825. The town was named for Captain John Gresham, a British officer who had explored the area in 1824. In 1839, Greshamsville was established as a separate village within the town. The original post office was located on State Street. In 1870, Gresham became an incorporated city and has remained that way ever since.
