Gresham, Oregon is a small town in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The population was 5,908 at the 2010 census. The Gresham Historic District is a registered national historic district that includes 82 buildings and 2 contributing structures from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The area around Gresham was first settled by European Americans in 1847 as part of the nearby Multnomah County seat of Salem. In 1849, local farmers organized what would become the Polk County Agricultural Society to buy land grants for growth within its boundaries. By 1857, Gresham had established itself as an agricultural center with a school and Market square. A post office opened in 1858 and soon became known for its quality produce: apples were especially prevalent due to access to fertile farmland. In 1861, when Oregon became an American state, Gresham passed through its hands for various reasons: it was apportioned among three other states on the day before Oregon became a state (Oregon took California and Nevada instead), it voted against becoming a county due to lack of population density (it only had 1 settler per square mile) and because of congressional action that forced all counties into formation statewide – gentry properties such as Gresham were exempted from this rule (the exemption continued until 1959). The resulting political chaos led to increased competition for land in rural areas which ultimately led to development opportunities near Salem proper—Gresham slowly emerged as an agriculturally based community with stagnating populations until WWII when people began moving there during World War II military defense efforts; nowadays, there are few businesses or residences located within town limits but most residents commute outwards or operate their own businesses in unincorporated areas outside town limits. GresHAM HISTORIC DISTRICT The history of Gresham begins way back on November 25th 1797 when our ancestors Captain John Smith set foot on this continent after sailing down the Columbia River from Vancouver Island in Canada with his family including six children age 3-7 years old named James Cook Jr., Joseph Banks III., William Bligh I’M Cook III., Samuel Ewing Rossiter II., Maria Cook & her sisters Anna & Elizabeth Stroud along side twoCanoes crewed by HMS Discovery boundoeing[sic] upriver towards Portland Bay then south along Willamette River arriving at present day Salem December 14th 1797 just days after Captains John Smith & Nicholas Deschamps explored that same river channel reaching today’s Vandalia[sic] Landing Site where they landed having journeyed more than 700 miles overland over difficult terrain crossing streams Bridges Lakes Rivers etc…..It can be said without question that Captain John Smith paved the way for us all here today as he discovered America 249 Years ago! Our ancestor’s story continues on April 10th 1865 when George Washington Land Grantee named James WickersHAM purchased 12 acres east of present day downtown called “Old Fields” following his return trip from Yakima Valley via Cape Disappointment [sic]. After years of hard work by his grandson David HAM who farmed those fields until 1994,[1] we can finally say we have confirmation……….that Old Fields actually stands today! On February 1st 1888 Charles Goodyear leased 4 acre block #2 near downtown called “Goodyear Hill” adjacent to current day OSHA Headquarters…two blocks west of Park Street on Goodyear Hill remained unconverted farmlands until 1978 when developer Donny Schumacher sold them parcelmeal [sic] making him one of only two people everto sell property directly unto another person inside our current city limits! From 1978 thru 1990 much controversy surrounded how goodyear hill should be Developed given its proximity OSHA Headquarters however after much public outcry Developers agreed to tear down Goodyear Hill Building& remainder is now used as Parking Garage!!!!!!!!! As you walk Prospector Road past City Hall you will see what I am talking about!!???????
