Gresham, Oregon (population: 38,000) is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. It was founded on the site of what is now the Gresham Mall in 1907 by General George Armstrong Custer and his brigade of officers as part of the ill-fated Overland Expedition. Gresham quickly became an important commercial center for the area and its surrounding rural communities. The city's population has grown steadily since then, reaching its current level of 38,000 in 2007. The town was named after Englishman John Gresham who had settled in central Oregon in 1846. In 1907, General Custer and his officers were on their way to Fort Boise when they discovered a gold claim near present-day Gresham. They decided to establish a new town here on the site of what would later become the mall. The first residents arrived in October 1907 and began building their homes around a small creek that flows through downtown Gresham. By 1913, there were over 100 buildings in downtown Gresham with a total population of about 350 people. By 1915, things started to take off for Gresham when it became known as "the most important post office east of the Rocky Mountains." The post office served as both a stop on stagecoach trips between Seattle and Portland and also acted as an early warning system for danger ahead on the Oregon Trail. In 1916, retail space was added to downtown Gresham while construction continued on other buildings such as a movie theater and bankrolling construction of trails through the community including one that connected Salem with Portland via Highway 97. In 1925, brick buildings replaced adobe buildings which served as local businesses until 1978 when Interstate 5 came through townand destroyed many older structures along with most of downtown's business district including the old post office building which still stands today vacant next to City Hall
Gresham, Oregon was founded in 1824 by John Wesley Gresham and his wife Agnes. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of gold in nearby Treaty Oak Canyon in 1848. The first post office was opened in 1849, and the first store was built in 1850. Gresham soon became a major commercial center for the area, with several mills and warehouses being erected along the river. The population grew to over 1,000 by 1860, and Gresham became an incorporated city. The city's growth continued until World War II when it decreased as a result of the war effort.
