The town had a population of only 34 people when it incorporated as a town on November 3, 1875. By 1900, Gresham had grown to a population of 1,500 residents and became one of the most important towns in Douglas County due to its strategic location betweenPortland and Salem. In 1916–1917 during World War I local soldiers served with distinction in France; this helped increase the town's profile even further and by 1920 it had become one of the largest cotton growing areas in Oregon. During World War II Gresham was known for its production of munitions such as bombs and shells. In 1945 local businessman Jens Jensen developed what is now called Jensen's Park which overlooks downtown Gresham from Siskiyou Avenue. This park today features many popular amusement rides including Space Mountain and Six Flags Over Georgia (formerly California Adventure). During WWII also glassblowing mills were developed near downtown Greshan by local man Willis O'Brien who later went onto found Wacoal Glass Company which produced some of America’s most famous windows including those at Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium In recent years there has been much redevelopment taking place within downtown Gresham with new restaurants/bars/nightlife options along Siskiyou Avenue as well as several highrise buildings housing apartments or offices overlooking downtown Today Downtown Gresham contains over 12 shopping centers that offer diverse merchandise items not just window displays
