In 1907-08 Mayor Augustus Burch bought land northeast of town for what would become Oregon State University (OSU). Today OSU occupies much of that original purchase - one half mile wide by two miles long - making it one of the largest university campuses in North America. In 1969 Gresham voters passed an ordinance adopting Measure 11 which provided for bilingual education for all students in grades K-12 within the school district; this provision was repealed by Oregon Education Code §5-202(1) in 2002 after public opposition over concerns about its potential impact onilingual education elsewhere within Oregon schools statewide. Gresham, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of the US state of Oregon. It was founded in 1855 by Captain John A. Gresham and his wife Eliza C. Gresham as part of the same ranch that later became The Dalles damsite. The first settler in what is now Gresham was George Wigglesworth, who arrived in 1857. In 1865, Jens Jensen arrived from Sweden with his family to start a wheat farm near the present day intersection of NE 122nd and SW Morrison streets. He named his farm "Jensen's Mill" after himself and his son Jonas (1822-1883). After some years, he sold his land to James Hutton who built a mill on it which still stands today. In 1888, Everett McKinney opened a grocery store on SE Division Street which would become one of the most important businesses in Gresham until it closed its doors in 1957. In 1951, a sawmill was built on NE 122nd Street by Clyde Tilton and became one of the largest mills in town when it opened its doors. Other important businesses during this time include a blacksmith shop and post office which both operated until they were discontinued around 1915-1920; an insurance company which opened its doors in 1923; and finally, an auto dealership which came into operation around 1947 before closing its doors several years later due to financial difficulties (though remnants can be found today). In 1955, when Gresham formed its own government under the name "City of Gresham", many residents took up arms against members of the local sheriff's department for refusing to disband their militia unit known as "The Hawks". This training academy trained men for defense against bandits and other threats during early American pioneer days. The city lost many citizens during this time as well as much property because of these hostilities (the loss included many homes along NE 122nd Street). However, despite these setbacks, over 50% of current residents are descendants or friends or family members of those who lived here at one point or another throughout history!
Gresham, Oregon was settled in 1851 by the Gresham and Pacific Railroad. It became a city in 1907. The Portland metropolitan area reached its peak population size in the early 1960s, and Gresham coped with the impact of that growth by becoming an annex to Portland. In 1998, Gresham annexed more land from Beaverton to form a new city government.
