Gresham is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. Gresham is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first white person to set foot in what is now Gresham was Captain George Vancouver on July 24, 1795. He and his men discovered freshwater springs and land that would become part of the city of Portland. In 1847, John Sutter founded the City of Portland along the Willamette River and Gresham became a suburb within it. The townsite for Gresham was straddling what is now downtown Clackamas County on three sides: West Side (northwest corner), East Side (southeast corner), and South Side (southwest corner). On October 10, 1857, James Wickersheimer sold 1/4 mile east from Interstate 5 to the town for $5 per acre; this created an east-west street grid that still exists today. Wickersheimer's donation allowed residents to build their homes without fear of mortgage interest payments or home foreclosure. In 1955, when Interstate 5 was built through Clackamas County and bypassing much of Gresham center on Park Boulevard, most people left for more developed areas such as Beaverton or Hillsboro while some continued to live in small communities around rural roads near I-5 until they were displaced by Highway 101 construction which began in 1965 and continued until 1990. Gresham, Oregon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon and it is located about 20 miles south of Salem. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. Gresham has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was founded as a Methodist church settlement on the banks of the Willamette River by John Fitch and his wife, Sarah Winchester. It became an agricultural center after being granted land in 1854 by Senator David Willey. In 1907 Gresham joined the Portland metropolitan statistical area, which comprises most of Oregon and neighboring states. The town was named for George Gresham, an early settler who had bought land near present-day Gresham in 1847. The first post office opened in Gresham on July 1, 1851, and remained open until 1959. In 1902–1903 construction began on what would become known as "The Alibi" hotel; it opened in 1905 and remains one of Gresham's most popular tourist attractions today. One result of its popularity has been that much of Gresham's historical fabric has been preserved through public museum displays and associated research projects over many years.
Gresham was founded in 1847 by George Gresham, a farmer and surveyor. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its position on the Willamette River. In 1855, Gresham became the county seat of Clackamas County. The town experienced another growth spurt during World War II, when it became the principal military base for Oregon.
