The Grants Pass region in Oregon was settled by the Wenatchee and other tribes in the late 18th century. The first permanent structures were built on what is now the east side of town, near where the Oregon Trail crossed the Willamette River. A trading post and landing site called Port Orford was established there in 1799, and a small community developed around it. By 1821, however, most of present-day Grant Pass had been founded. Grant Pass grew quickly due to its strategic location at the junction of two major wagon trails—the Oregon Trail and the main road from Portland to Snohomish County. In 1846, Congress passed an act authorizing donated land in Grant Pass for the construction of a military fortification known as Fort Donelson. The fort was completed in 1850 but never used because it was too close to Portland. In 1861, during America's Civil War, Grant Pass became one of four Union Posts near McMinnville along with Fort Sumner (later renamed Fort Columbia), Camp Douglas (later renamed Camp Chase), and Fort Stevens (later renamed Fort Stevens Heights). On February 24, 1862, Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Custer at what is now Black Friday Prairie outside of town. For his actions that day, Custer was awarded a Medal of Honor. During World War II, several industries were located in or around Grant Pass including aluminum production at Mount Hood Aluminum Company and shipbuilding facilities at Salmon Bay Shipyard & Drydock Company; these operations ceased after 1945. As part of its efforts to attract new businesses to town during this time period, Grants Pass created an economic development corporation which helped promote local businesses throughout the years; this entity remains active today as GrantsPass Economic Development Corporation Incorporated.
