Grant Pass is a city in Lane County, Oregon, United States. The population was 20,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lane County. Grant Pass was founded by gold prospectors in 1859 and named for Ulysses S. Grant, an American general who served as Secretary of War under President James K. Polk during the American Civil War. The town gradually grew as a result of its location near Willamette River gravel beds and its close access to transportation routes such as the Oregon Liability and General Liability Railroad and Stagecoach Road. Grants Pass became a city on November 3, 1937, when it annexed part of the neighboring town of Sisters. In 1990, Grants Pass annexed the remaining parts of Sisters due to a request from City Councilwoman Gayle McLaughlin-Shaw. The history of Grants Pass can be traced back to 1859 when gold prospectors arrived in what is now Lane County looking for new land to mine during the Oregon Gold Rush frenzy that began two years earlier. The first settlers were primarily men from Illinois and Missouri who decided to venture into what would become one of America's most remote regions rich in gold resources but also home to some tough conditions such as high mountains and hot summers. By 1870, many families had built log cabins or small towns around their mines while others continued mining until 1914 when production declined due to over-pumping caused by rapid growth in nearby Portland (the state capital at the time). However, regional economic development slowly picked up throughout World War II because patients being treated at regional hospitals received military medical supplies through mail order instead of having them delivered directly to their homes; this increased demand for local goods resulting in prices dropping significantly which helped stimulate local businesses during wartime shortages (seeUSA civilian spending 1945-1946). Grant Pass was settled in 1847 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The first store in the town was built on Main Street in 1849. In 1850, a post office was established at Grant Pass. The town grew rapidly, and by 1865 there were nine stores and thirty-six homes. In 1870, a railroad station was built and the town became part of the Portland Railroad System. By 1880, Grant Pass had a population of 300 people. It declined during the Great Depression but regained popularity in the late 1950s when it became an agricultural center for Oregon's Willamette Valley. The population peaked at 1,500 people in 1970 but has since declined to about 500 people today.
