In 1916, Grants Pass residents ratified a petition calling for statehood which led to Oregon's entry into the United States as a country on January 14th of that year. For many years thereafter, Grants Pass functioned as both an economic center fordependent rural areas around Pendleton (including The Dalles) and also served as an important stopover point along Oregon's railroad system during travel through central Oregon (mainly Northwestern Oregon). Throughout most of its history, GrantsPass has been known primarily for its agriculture which continues to be its mainstay today although some recent commercial developments have attracted attention including: a grocery store/cafeteria complex; retail sales space occupied by several Farmer’s Markets over time; construction of three self-storage facilities; and development of several residential properties with accompanying businesses such as restaurants/bars/clubs within walking distance of each other (the last two being especially popular among young people).
