The town is named after Major General David Hatch and his family who settled there in 1855. Grant Pass is a small town in Oregon, located about an hour south of Portland. The name "Grant Pass" was given to the town by General George Armstrong Custer on July 27, 1876, as part of a land grant to his father-in-law, John Wesley Powell. Grant Pass has been home to many famous people over the years, including (but not limited to) George Washington Carver and Joseph Pulitzer. The first European settlers in the area were the French in 1792 and they named the area Grafton after Captain Pierre Gaultier de La Harpe who explored and mapped much of what is now eastern Oregon. In 1819, United States Geological Survey surveyor James Bridgman traveled through Grant Pass and found that it was one of the most important places along the Columbia River for fur trading. The first post office was established at Grant Pass in 1828, but it closed in 1833 due to financial problems. Grants pass saw its first bloom during World War I when U.S. military personnel stationed there furnished food for troops fighting in Europe. In 1919, local businessmen formed a group to build a dam across the Columbia River at Pendleton which would provide water for their community and neighboring towns such as Hoodsboro and Corvallis. However, this project came up against numerous obstacles from environmentalists who felt that hydropower would be detrimental to fish populations downstream; eventually it was abandoned entirely in 1920 due to these concerns. Grant Pass didn't really take off until after World War II when many veterans began moving into town from outlying areas of Oregon because of good job opportunities available hereabouts postwar than anywhere else in America! Many interesting businesses were born out of this period including Graphisoft Software Inc., which developed computer games like Pac-Man and Super Mario Bros., while also developing various other software products; Grants PASS High School became one of only two high schools in Oregon permanently accredited by NCAA Division I heath sports programs; while also hosting several annual tournaments such as The Open Tennis Tournament (now known as The Masters) that have become world championships!
