The town of Grants Pass, Oregon was founded in 1879 by the brothers John and Nathan Meeker. The Meeker brothers were Americans who had come to Oregon from Minnesota. With their new town, the Meekers started a school and a bakery. In 1881, they built a sawmill on the Willamette River. The mill began producing lumber for buildings in Grants Pass and other towns in Oregon. In 1912, the Meeker family sold their business to George Wuhlbeck of Portland. Wuhlbeck renamed the mill the Grant Pass Lumber Company and it continued production until 1959.
