The first Europeans to visit Grant Pass were John Cranch and his party on July 4, 1842. They named the stream after General George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle two years earlier. It was then that business began to take off in Grant Pass with a store opening its doors in 1850 and a post office being established two years later. By 1860, over seventy businesses had opened up within the town limits including a schoolhouse and three churches! The Grants Pass area was first settled by the Umpqua people in 1847. The town of Grants Pass was founded in 1853, and became a thriving center for agriculture and trade. In the early 20th century, the town underwent rapid growth as a result of its strategic location on the Oregon-Washington Railroad. The population grew rapidly and by 1910 had reached 100 residents. By 1920, the population had increased to 600 residents, and by 1930 it had reached 1,500 residents. During World War II, Grants Pass played an important role in the war effort due to its location at the junction of several major highways. The town was also home to two main airfields during World War II: Grant Air Force Base and Sell Air Force Base. In 1949, Grants Pass was renamed after General George Custer
